Success Story – Kelly

Creating a Loving, Stable Home

Kelly was a single mother with seven young children. She loved her children dearly, but she had neither the knowledge nor the support system necessary to effectively care for them on her own. Kelly had not worked in 10 years, and as a result, she struggled to live independently. She frequently bounced from house to house, often staying with friends when she had nowhere else to go. Understandably, with seven children, her friends could not take her family in for long. Kelly and her children never knew what it was like to have a stable place to call home.

Kelly was completely overwhelmed. Beyond that, with so much guilt and so many worries, she just couldn’t enjoy being a parent. Thankfully, Child Protective Services referred Kelly to the North Sacramento Family Resource Center for Home Visitation Services, and with their help, she was able to create a better life for herself and her family.

With support from her in-home visitor, Kelly and her children made tremendous progress in a short time. Not long after home visitation began, Kelly found a good job as a caretaker for two elderly women. As a result, she was able to move into her own apartment. Kelly also engaged in the FRC’s Nurturing Parenting Program, where she learned about child development, empathy, and effective discipline. More than a year after her referral, Kelly had not required any CPS involvement in her family’s life. Not only was she parenting her children more effectively, but she had learned how to have fun and enjoy being a parent. She was finally able to provide her children with the loving, stable home they deserved.
