Fill-A-Backpack Drive: More Info and FAQs

This year it will look a bit different, but our annual Fill-A-Backpack Drive is back!

At the Sacramento Children’s Home, we know that a bright future begins with a good education. Unfortunately, many of the children we serve lack resources for proper supplies. For children in need, something as simple as a new backpack can boost their confidence and self-esteem and set them on a path to success.

Donating a filled backpack is an easy way to get involved and support the Sacramento Children’s Home. This year, we’re hoping to provide backpacks and school supplies to local children who need them most.

Frequently Asked Questions

Has the Fill-A-Backpack Drive changed due to COVID-19?
Yes, but only slightly, and we think the change will be more convenient for you. This year, we’ve built shopping lists on Amazon, Target, and Walmart. Visit the online retailer of your choice, fill your cart with what you’re comfortable with, and have it shipped directly to us!

Do I need to purchase every item on the list?
While we’d appreciate if each shipment contained a backpack full of all items a student needs, we also welcome smaller donations – whatever you are comfortable donating.

Are there any restrictions?
Some schools restrict solid blue and solid red backpacks as these are deemed gang colors. If this is the only option available to you, we will accept them. We collect for both boys and girls, from preschool age to high school.

When do you need them by?
We would appreciate donations by July 31 to prepare for our Family Resource Centers’ giveaway events,  but we will gladly accept through Sept. 4.

I really love to shop in person, can I still do that?
While we would prefer to have the items shipped, we can accommodate no-contact drop offs scheduled in advance. Please contact Ann Checkley (916) 290-8203 to discuss details.

If you’d like to provide a cash donation in lieu of shopping, please go to, select Designation: Other and type in “Fill-A-Backpack” or mail us a check with “Fill-A-Backpack” on the memo line.
