With summer in full swing, we are once again collecting backpacks as part of our annual SCH Fill-A-Backpack Drive!
At the Sacramento Children’s Home, we know that a bright future begins with a good education. Unfortunately, many of the children we serve lack resources for proper supplies. For children in need, something as simple as a new backpack can boost their confidence and self-esteem, and set them on a path to success.
Donating a filled backpack is an easy way to get involved and support the Sacramento Children’s Home! Last year, we collected over 600 filled backpacks. But this year’s need is even greater—we’re hoping for 750 filled backpacks!
If you’d like to participate, it’s as simple as sharing this link or the attached flyer with colleagues, friends, and family and bringing your donations to the Sacramento Children’s Home.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I deliver the backpacks?
To the Sacramento Children’s Home on 2750 Sutterville Road, Monday through Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. For large donations or to schedule a drop off time, please call Donor Relations Coordinator Ann Checkley at 916-290-8203.
Do they need to be filled?
Yes, please. Filled backpacks are easier to collect, transport, and deliver to the children we serve.
What should they be filled with?
Please see the flyer attached. You don’t need one of everything, just anything and everything you might supply your own child with to prepare them for their first day of school.
Are there any restrictions?
The only restriction is solid red and solid blue backpacks. The schools have asked to avoid these as they are deemed gang colors. We will accept, for instance, a lighter blue backpack with a pattern for a younger child. We do collect for both boys and girls, from preschool age to high school.
When do you need them by?
While we’d love them by August 1 to contribute to our Family Resource Center backpack giveaway events, we will collect through Sept. 7.
If you meet or exceed your goal, do you still need help?
Absolutely! We put a conservative goal of 750 after collecting 600 last year, but the need is so great that no matter how many backpacks we collect, they will be used. Remember, we serve about 6,900 children in eight programs annually.
