Yesterday, the Sacramento Children’s Home proudly continued a longstanding tradition with its annual Residential Graduation Ceremony, celebrating youth in the Residential Program for their academic accomplishments, personal growth, and commitment to achieving their goals.
Family members, staff, and peers gathered to honor students advancing from sixth to seventh grade, moving from eighth grade into high school, and graduating from high school. The ceremony featured a traditional processional, with graduates dressed in blue caps and gowns, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and a celebration of each young person’s hard work and perseverance.
The event highlighted not only academic achievements but also the personal growth demonstrated by the youth throughout the year. Several special awards were presented to recognize outstanding accomplishments, including Academic Improvement, Creativity, Citizenship, Perfect Attendance, and participation in the Reading to Dogs Program.
A special highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the Burt Brown Spirit Award, a longstanding tradition that began in 1960. Each year, this meaningful award is thoughtfully presented to a youth in the Residential Program who exemplifies its core values through positive participation, perseverance, leadership, and personal growth. The recipient is selected based on their ability to reach goals, demonstrate strong coping skills, serve as a positive role model for peers, show a willingness to compromise, and consistently follow program expectations while striving toward success. The award was presented by Tanisha, Lead Residential Counselor, in an energetic and uplifting moment that reflected the spirit of the ceremony.
As the ceremony drew to a close, one graduating youth delivered a heartfelt commencement speech. Speaking from the heart, he thanked the staff members who supported him and the other youth throughout their journeys and shared an optimistic message about the future. The room was filled with pride as he spoke, and attendees were moved by his thoughtful reflection, as well as the growth, confidence, and resilience he continues to demonstrate.
The ceremony served as a proud reminder of how far these young people have come. Sacramento Children’s Home congratulates the Residential Program Class of 2026 and all of the award recipients on their achievements.
