Direct Volunteer Opportunities
SCH Programs
Helping others feels good, and helps you feel good about yourself. Being a program volunteer at the Sacramento Children’s Home provides rewarding experiences and opportunities to use your talents.
A program volunteer works directly with one of our programs. Some volunteers prefer to work directly with our children playing board games, reading or simply giving individual time to a child. Some have a special skill to share or a hobby to teach a small group of children on a weekly basis.
To be a program volunteer, you must be at least 21 years old, have a clean criminal background and be able to commit to a regular schedule for a minimum of one year. Please contact Judy Schefer at 916.452.3981 or judy.schefer@kidshome.org.

- "MY BAGS": Do you like to sew? The Crisis Nursery gives a a personal "My Bag" to each child when he/she leaves the Nursery. Each drawstring bag, approximately 24 x 18 inches, holds a child's blanket, a new book, a teddy bear and personal hygiene items.
SCH Special Friends
Imagine what it must be like to have no adult to call your own. No grown up who can spend time just with you…reading, playing games or just talking about your day. The staff at the Sacramento Children’s Home goes out of their way to make each child feel special, but at times, it’s just not enough. Our residents know that staff are paid to be there, and staff members almost always supervise several children at a time.
Having a mentor or Special Friend gives one of our residential children that special someone. You are there because you want to be—you want to give that child a positive relationship with a caring adult. You want your child to have a role model, a confidant, a head start in life.
Special Friends work with younger children, usually between the ages of 7 and 14. Mentors work with children age 15 or older. Once paired with your friend, you’ll visit during group activities as you get to know each other. Once a relationship begins, you’ll spend time together at least an hour a week. At first, your visits will be on the grounds of SCH. Later, you’ll be able to take your friend out for activities like a visit to the zoo, a River Cats game or a movie.
Special Friends serve as valuable role models and play a significant part in rebuilding self-esteem, trust of others and a sense of personal self-worth in children damaged by abuse. To be a Special Friend, you must be at least 21 years old, have a clean criminal background and be able to commit to a regular schedule for at least one year.

Events
From celebrity sporting events to small parties, many wonderful groups support the Sacramento Children’s Home with fundraisers and special events. Occasionally, the organizers ask for volunteers to help with registration, crowd control, passing out goodie bags and other tasks before and during the event.
A Special Event volunteer helps at events when needed—sometimes it’s glamorous, sometimes it’s not! All volunteers represent the Sacramento Children’s Home to the event organizers and attendees. We ask for personable people who can speak about our agency with confidence and knowledge.
We need Special Event volunteers throughout the year to plan and execute events, pick up donations and log gifts during the holiday season. To be a Special Events volunteer, you must be at least 21 years old and have a clean criminal background.
