SCH Crisis Nurseries (www.crisisnurseries.org)

The Crisis Nursery is a family strengthening program of the Sacramento Children’s Home for children 0-5, serving families at times of stress in their lives. The program is voluntary, confidential and of no cost to the family. This is the only program of its kind in Sacramento County with a population of 170.000 families with children.

The program has two components: Emergency Child Care, 7am-7pm AND 24 hour shelter for up to 30 days. Equally important is the fact that our case managers work with the families while their children stay in the program; providing safety, consistency, and trust for the child and family.

The Crisis Nursery has a capacity of 20 children for Emergency Child Care, 7am-7pm and 14 children for overnight stay for up to 30 days. We recently expanded the program:

  • We offer transportation (not only pick up and drop off, but for visits/medical/other needs as well.)
  • We offer parenting classes: “Making Parenting a Pleasure.”
  • We have a preschool curriculum.

Transition Age Program

The Transition Age Program or TAP, which had its beginnings over 10 years ago, is a voluntary mental health and wellness program for young people operated by the Sacramento Children’s Home. It has the capacity to serve 70 clients and is centrally located on 1815 Stockton Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95816. Our clients can range from 14-21.

Young people who have social and emotional challenges and who are interested in increasing their coping skills and self-sufficiency utilize the program. Clients receive services after the Sacramento Child & Family Access Team makes a referral to TAP. TAP has provided an important safety net for former foster youth who, at times, come to us urgently needing to find housing and a connection to community resources. At the same time, our program offers a wide array of these and other services for clients from all backgrounds and living situations.

The TAP team of clinicians, community mental health workers (CMHW), nurse, psychiatrist and Family Partner work in concert with the client and his or her family to develop an inclusive treatment plan. Client and family services can include individual, group, and family therapy, medication support and monitoring, life skills training, socialization skills enhancement, housing and vocational referrals, and the development of self advocacy skills.

Family Resource Center/Birth & Beyond

The Sacramento Children’s Home operates three Family Resource Centers that help parents meet the physical, emotional and developmental needs of their children through workshops and group sessions.  Each center offers the Birth & Beyond Community Response program to assist at-risk families in improving effective parenting strategies and reducing instances of abuse and neglect in the community. Through home visitation, workshops and case management/counseling services, these programs help parents to meet the physical, emotional and developmental needs of their children. From expectant moms to parents of large families, all can participate in workshops, group sessions and instruction on child development, nutrition and health care issues. Centers exist in high-risk areas for child abuse.
